Rubric
Rubrique – according to the French dictionary Larousse du XXe Siècle, 6 volumes.
Rubique (column in English) comes from the latin rubrica meaning red earth. Red earth, red chalk, a type of sanguine-red chalk, used by carpenters to draw a line onto a piece of wood using a string. In the early years of the printing press, it was common during the Middle-Ages to print, the titles of chapters, the initials of the first line of a paragraph and the passages on which one wanted to draw attention in red. The idea of drawing someone’s attention by using the color red is one that pleases me. In this monthly column I plan to share with you my observations, my thoughts and ponderings on the different aspects related to precious metal jewelry making and that of precious stone jewelry, a trade that I have been practicing for over 30 years now. Via this column, I will also endeavor to explain to you the distinctive characteristics related to the making of jewelry, to let you discover the points of view of an honest and conscientious worker and finally to break down the myths and legends already spread too far and large concerning these trades and so many others.
I am eager to point out the kindness of our faithful clientele, Quebeckers and those from other countries here and from abroad, whose comments and discussions have allowed me to constantly move forward in the practice of my trade. I do thank them from the bottom of my heart.
To be able to play a small part in people’s lives, to be able to share in the happiness of others by the quality of my work, by my love for things beautiful and through my respect for each and everyone means a great deal to me. Therein lies the great motivation behind my work. At the school for jewelry I attended in Paris, rue du Louvre, a simple sentence written in large lettering adorned one of the walls. If something is worth doing, then it is worth doing right or not at all. (free translation) It is this saying which has guided me to this day.
